The main role of nickel in stainless steel is that it changes the crystal structure of the steel. Increase of nickel in stainless steel is a major cause the formation of austenite crystal structure, such as stainless steel so as to improve the properties of plasticity, weldability and toughness, so nickel is called austenite-forming element. The crystal structure of ordinary carbon steel known as ferrite, was a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure, adding nickel to promote structural changes the crystal structure from a body-centered cubic (BCC) for the face-centered cubic (FCC) structure, which is called austenite. However, nickel is not the only element of this nature. Common austenite forming elements are: nickel, carbon, nitrogen, manganese, copper. The relative importance of these elements in the context of forming austenite crystal structure prediction for stainless steel is of great significance.
